Five Individuals Recognized for Outstanding Work in Scientific Research


COLUMBIA, SC - July 23, 2012- SCRA congratulated the recipients of the South Carolina Academy of Science's Governor's Awards for Excellence in Science. Yesterday, Governor Nikki Haley presented five awards to researchers from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), the University of South Carolina (USC), the University of South Carolina - Aiken and Clemson University. Each award recognized excellence in a different area of science. 
The five awards, sponsored by SCRA, MeadWestvaco and Michelin North America, honor individuals or teams within South Carolina that have made extraordinary achievements and contributions to science. SCRA sponsored two awards for Excellence in Scientific Research, won by Dr. Peter Kalivas, Director and Chair of the Neuroscience Department at MUSC and Dr. Mike Sutton, Professor at USC’s Department of Mechanical Engineering. SCRA also sponsored the Predominantly Undergraduate Institution Award for Excellence in Science, won by Dr. Garriet Smith, professor of Biology at USC- Aiken.
 
Other awardees were Dr. Melissa Moss, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at USC, sponsored by Michelin North America and Dr. Joshua Summers, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Clemson University, sponsored by MeadWestvaco.

The South Carolina Academy of Science, founded in 1924, is a state-wide, interdisciplinary science organization. Membership is open for anyone with an interest in science. The Governor's Awards for Excellence in Science were established in 1985.
