WASHINGTON, DC - September 1, 2010 - House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement on the conclusion of combat operations in Iraq.

“The end of combat operations in Iraq is another important step toward the fulfillment of President Obama’s promise to reduce the number of troops in the region, end our involvement in Iraq and bring our troops home.  Our service members have gone beyond the call of duty over the last seven years to bring some stability to Iraq and create the conditions on the ground that will allow the country to form their own government. I urge the Iraqi leadership to use this milestone to come back to the negotiating table and form a government as quickly as possible.

“As our troops return, it is important that we help them transition from the battlefield to life back home.  Democrats have consistently fought to provide our veterans with the resources necessary to assist that transition, and we will continue to do so in the future.  We’ve made historic investments in the VA budget, the G.I. Bill, health care, mental health, support for caregivers and improved care for women.  Our brave men and women in uniform and their families who sacrificed so much for our country deserve that support."
