YWCA Stand Against Racism

CHARLESTON, SC - April 30, 2010 - On Friday, April 30, 2010, The YWCA of Greater  Charleston  will be sponsoring The Stand Against Racism Event from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM at the YWCA facility at 106 Coming Street.  The purpose of the event is to raise awareness about the issue of racism in today’s society and to celebrate different cultures within the Charleston community.  This free event is open to the public and the community is invited to come and “take a stand against racism”.

Other sponsors include the City of Charleston Mayor’s Office for Children, Youth, and Families, Charleston School of Law, Calvary Episcopal Church, Coastal Community Foundation, MUSC NCBI Campus Leadership Team, NAACP Charleston Branch, SC National Office of the ACLU, League of Women Voters, and the Carolina Youth Development Center. The one day event is part of YWCA’s national Stand Against Racism initiative, and YWCA’s across the nation will be hosting similar events working to tackle issues of racism on Friday, April 30th.

The following community leaders will be speaking at the event:  Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr., Jodee Robinson (Nuevos Caminos), Marlin Kempsen (Attorney), Jim Young (Charleston Ports Authority), and Lydia Cotton (Hispanic Liaison).  There will also be Bollywood Dancing, a Poetry Slam performance, music provided by a local DJ, and henna tattooing.

Inside the YWCA, several videos will be shown and continually playing, including one produced by youth from the West Ashley High School leadership class.  Food will also be available for purchase.
