CHARLESTON, SC - Footlight is proud to open the season on with the historic Charleston production, one dear to our hearts, of Porgy and Bess. Not only will the troupe be honoring one of its earliest board members, DuBose Heyward, and his wife and collaborator, Dorothy Heyward, but the performance also marks this as the premiere production of this great American work at the historic Dock Street Theatre on Church Street.

Set in Charleston's fabled Catfish Row, Porgy and Bess is the story of beautiful Bess who struggles to break free from her scandalous past. The only one who can rescue her is the crippled but courageous Porgy. Threatened by her former lover Crown, and the seductive enticements of the troublemaker Sporting Life, Porgy and Bess' relationship evolves into a triumphant love story.
