Chief Brack officially took the helm of the Charleston Fire Department last month after Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. announced her selection in May over 60 candidates in a nationwide search. A native of Savannah with over 30 years of firefighting experience, she comes to Charleston from Eugene, Ore. where she was the Deputy Chief of Shift Operations.
Here she runs a department with 309 career firefighters (no volunteer firefighters) in 19 fire stations and inherited a department that in recent years has been taken to task for antiquated practices and policy breaches, brought to light with the tragic Sofa Super Store fire that killed nine firefighters in 2007.
The City of Charleston presents unique firefighting concerns with nearly 20,000 structures of which over 8,000 are historically important, plus residential and commercial buildings on the peninsula that are up to 200 years old, constructed of wood and just a few feet from neighboring buildings.
Chief Brack is currently enrolled in the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program, has a BS in Biology from Clayton State College, and AAS in both Fire Science and Paramedic Technology.
Lunch is $28 including parking and an imaginative three course meal by Halls Executive Chef Matthew Niessner. Doors open at 11:30 AM and lunch is served promptly at noon.
